步行到聖約翰大教堂 The Cathedral Church of St. Johm the Divine 不會很遠，但如果你能跟我一樣走到葛蘭特將軍的朋友們，相信你們腿已經很酸了吧！

 

接下來要介紹聖約翰大教堂 The Cathedral Church of St. Johm the Divine。

 

你們相信這座教堂經歷過兩次的世界大戰嗎？事實上，興建於 1892 年的聖約翰大教堂還歷經過設計風格不斷變更、資金短缺的問題，所以至今都宣稱尚未完工。

 

教堂面積之大足以涵蓋兩座足球場。天花板也高達 37.7 公尺，是世界上最大的哥德式建築，能容納上萬人，是美國建築歷史的指標之一。教堂曾在 2001 年 12 月 18 號發生火災，部分區域遭到祝融侵蝕，但我到的時候似乎已修建完畢。

接著來替你們介紹幾個參觀重點：

正面的青銅大門

青銅門，每扇重達三噸，左右各以舊約聖經創世紀，新約聖經的耶穌生平為浮雕主題，由鑄造自由女神的藝術家 Barbedienne 鑄造而成。

外牆正面的精美雕刻

除了青銅門外，外牆上的牆面雕刻美得讓人屏息，複雜而精采

不知是我看錯或沒有，雕刻上有些被賦予了顏色。

圓形玫瑰花窗

直徑達 12 公尺，是全美最大的圓形花窗，由超過一萬片的玻璃組合而成。

教堂中殿

左右共有十四個不同主題的凹壁，以彩色花窗呈現不同職業及宗教的主題景象。

十四個不同主題分別如下：

           聖壇

美國             軍事

聖公會         地球

法律             醫藥

教育             傳播

十字軍         勞工

藝術         傳教士

體育         萬靈龕

白色大理石講道壇

雕刻極為精細的白色大理石講道壇，以聖經人物為主題，值得細細觀賞。

唱詩班座席區

有著繁複雕刻的唱詩班座席非常壯觀，地面上彩色的磁磚拼貼也是參觀重點。

聖壇

聖壇四周有八根花崗岩石柱，兩座巨大的燭台

及兩個由日本天皇致贈的琺瑯花瓶。

七個禮拜堂

圍繞著祭壇的七個禮拜堂，每一間都有雕花的鑄鐵欄杆、華美的玫瑰花窗、以及莊嚴的聖壇，其中以 St. Saviours 禮拜堂內，由已逝藝術家 Keith Haring 生前設計製作的銀質三連圖最為特別。

 

出了教堂後，別忘了位在教堂左手邊的雕塑公園，公園雖小但有許多的小青銅藝術作品環繞整個公園。

 

如果你找不到公園，正中央那座噴泉雕像 (Peace Fountain) 就是了。

 

這座雕像除了大以外，還另有日月、水火、動物、天使與撒旦等圖騰，表達善與惡的兩面。
